The Sustainable Growth Rate process that has been in use in the healthcare sector for years is in the process of being replaced by a new system called the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) This change is in line with the MACRA 2015, section 102 guidelines, that means certain requirements will come into play when measuring the quality of physician and hospital services. Alternative payment model (APMs) will also come into play with this new evaluation system. The set timeline for these significant changes begins on 1 January 2016 with the actual payment adjustments implemented by 2018. Therefore, there is a very limited timeline for physicians to master this new system and ensure that the data collected from henceforth is accurate and will entice deserved payments. Since hospitals employ physicians, they too must be up to date with the MIPS.
